MMX 150, MMX 300 PRO, MMX 330 PRO & MMX 200 WIRELESS – DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GAMING HEADSETS

Our MMX series was recently expanded with the addition of the open-back gaming headset MMX 330 PRO and MMX 330 PRO MANUFAKTUR. Together with the MMX 300 PRO and MMX 300 PRO MANUFAKTUR, as well as the MMX 200 Wireless and MMX 150, the series now covers a wide range of preferences and use cases.

You’re probably wondering which gaming headset is the right choice for you. In this article, you’ll find out which model best suits your needs.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

First things: The Sound

The MMX 150 and MMX 200 Wireless share the same acoustic design. Their sound can best be described as lively and detailed. Both headsets are characterised by powerful bass, clear treble, and excellent spatiality. Whether it’s action-packed effects, atmospheric soundscapes, or dialogue – these headsets bring your games’ audio to life. While the MMX 150 is a USB headset with an integrated sound card, the MMX 200 Wireless is a Bluetooth® 5.3 headset.

The MMX 300 PRO, like the MMX 100, is a purely analogue headset. The MMX 300 PRO is manufactured at our site in Heilbronn, and its acoustic driver is also produced in-house at the beyerdynamic headquarters. As a result, both build quality and acoustics are of an even higher standard. The sound profile of the MMX 300 PRO features slightly more presence in the treble and a more analytical character. Compared to the MMX 300 PRO, the MMX 150 and MMX 200 Wireless are slightly more bass-oriented. The MMX 300 PRO covers a frequency range of 5 to 35,000 Hz, while the open-back MMX 330 PRO spans from 5 to 40,000 Hz. The MMX 150 covers a range of 5 to 30,000 Hz, and the MMX 200 Wireless transmits a range of 20 to 20,000 Hz.

MMX 150 & MMX 200 wireless: Spacious, clear and precise sound with powerful bass.

MMX 300 PRO: Very spatial and precise sound. Very detailed in the highs and balanced bass.

MMX 330 PRO: Exceptionally spacious, well-balanced sound at studio level. Natural reproduction of low and high frequencies.

MMX 150 & MMX 200 wireless: Natural, brilliant and present voice reproduction with high speech intelligibility.

MMX 300 PRO: Natural and present voice reproduction with very high speech intelligibility.

MMX 330 PRO: Natural and present voice reproduction with very high speech intelligibility.

Functions and compatibility

All models in the MMX series are designed with a closed-back construction. This means that the fully enclosed ear cups provide strong isolation from external noise.

A unique feature of the MMX 150 and MMX 200 Wireless models is the Augmented Mode: in this mode, ambient sounds are captured by two microphones integrated into the ear cups and mixed in real time into the playback signal in stereo. The volume of the added environmental sounds is calibrated so that the listener perceives them as if they were not wearing headphones at all. This function effectively simulates the experience of an open-back design.

The MMX 150 and the MMX 200 wireless have a integrated volume dial in the ear cup with a control function and Light Guide System. All headphone functions can be controlled via this dial. On the MMX 300/330 PRO, volume and muting are adjustable via the cable remote control.

All models are compatible with PC, Playstation, XBOX and other consoles. It should be noted, however, Augmented Mode (and control elements) require power, and therefore only operate via USB (or USB dongle). All devices and consoles that use the USB standard also support Augmented Mode. The Xbox consequently provides no support.

The MMX 200 wireless also offers a low latency mode. To use this, the included USB dongle has to be connected to the PC or other USB devices in order to keep the latency when gaming as low as possible. This eliminates the input lag between audio and image and ensures the best gaming experience.

Here an overview of compatibility and connectivity options:

MMX 150: Compatible via 4-pin jack plug (on controller – no Augmented Mode, no mute or volume control)

MMX 200 wireless: Compatibl via optionally available analog cable. (on the controller – no augmented mode/low latency mode/hybrid mode, no mute and volume control)

The Impedance

The MMX 150 and MMX 200 Wireless use the same 32-ohm system, which makes them suitable for use with mobile devices. The MMX 300 PRO also features a 32-ohm system, although it differs technically from the systems used in the other models. In contrast, the open-back gaming headset MMX 330 PRO uses a 48-ohm system.

It is possible to equip the MMX 300 PRO with a 600-ohm system via the MANUFAKTUR customisation service. However, we generally recommend the 32-ohm version. This variant can be used with a high-powered receiver/amplifier as well as with a PC, notebook, console, or mobile device. There is no sonic disadvantage compared to the 600-ohm version. If the headset is to be used exclusively with a very powerful sound card or amplifier, then – and only then – is the 600-ohm version advisable. The MMX 330 PRO gaming headset can also be individually customised through the MANUFAKTUR service.

Design and features

The base model of the MMX 300 PRO comes in black with velour ear pads, but it can be personalised via the MANUFAKTUR service. The ear cups can even be printed with a custom design. The MMX 150 and MMX 200 Wireless are each available in grey or black. On both models, the microphone and cable are detachable from the headphones.

The shape of the ear pads on the MMX 200 wireless has been slightly revised. Thanks to the new ear cushion shape, the gaming headset is particularly suitable for long gaming sessions. The ear cushions and the leatherette headband are filled with memory foam. This guarantees wearing comfort and prevents annoying pressure points on the head.

The ear pads on all headsets can be replaced quickly and easily.
